XIV. the deal
Wendy
It took my eyes far longer than Iâd have liked to adjust to the dark halls leading to Peterâs room. Even the silence took some getting used to; though blood had been roaring in my ears since the moment Iâd suspected what had Peter so upset. Noises from the partyâSmeeâs music, in particularâwere still rattling around in my cluttered mind, making this already difficult task no easier.
Tink remained silent and still as I walked. The hurt in her voice and that genuine expression of pain on her small face weighed heavily on my shoulders and didnât at all bode well for what I was about to attempt. The fact that not even Peterâs oldest friend had been able to console him was nothing short of horrifyingâand left me his only hope. But the closer I got, the more I couldnât shake my deepest fear. What did I have to offer that a fairy didnât, and what in hells would we do if I failed?
I stopped a few feet from his closed, and presumably locked, door. âPeter?â I called into the blackness, not bothering to knock. I knew already I wouldnât get an answer but wanted to at least announce that I was here. And a voice, even if it was my own, helped to counter some of the anxiety surging through my veins. âAre you in there?â
Nothing but the creak of the ship.
Sighing, I leaned my forehead against the door, raising my free hand to scratch at the uneven grooves. Hopefully it was just as irritating of a sound on the inside as it was on the outside. âTink told me what happened. Sheâs worried about you. We both are.â Still nothing, so I kept talking. âI know somethingâs up with you. You havenât been yourself for days. If you want to be alone, thatâs fine, but you have to at least have the decency to tell us to our faces. Otherwise, weâll be sitting out here all night, stiff, lonely, and freezing. You donât want that, do you?â
Something shuffled just behind the door. My heart fluttered expectantly, but it was back to eerie silence a heartbeat later. Turning, I sank to my knees before addressing Tink. âYouâre bonded to him, right? Canât you sense anything?â I had my suspicions, of course, but given that Peter wouldnât talk to me, maybe the fairy would.
She shook her small head as her light flashed a pale blue. âHeâs shut me out. I canât feel a thing.â
âWhat about before today? Before what happened?â I pressed. âSurely you know or felt something.â
âNothing. This is what heâs like, Wendy, always keeping his deepest emotions under lock and key. He doesnât behave any differently around you than he has with me for the past fifty years.â
There was an irritation to Tinkâs tone, and her light had turned an orange that bordered on crimson, but I ignored both to fixate on the most shocking revelation. âFifty years? So Peter isâ¦â
âMuch older than he looks, yes. But you already knew that.
